Business problem: SafetyCulture acquired the e-learning and training platform ‘Edapp’. SC wanted to integrate EdApp into its operations platform. However, they wanted to validate the value of training in the platform before beginning the massive engineering efforts and team movements that would need to take place.
Customer problem: Currently SafetyCulture and EdApp customer admins have an existing problem where using multiple platforms and software can create friction for their employee onboarding, learning a new software, downloading apps on their personal devices, and continuously jumping between different software. They also find the data between SafetyCulture and Edapp's training analytics are often compared and used in tandem in order to improve their Safety, Quality and training purposes. This gives us an opportunity to merge the products into the one platform, to eliminate friction, make SafetyCulture the one stop shop for all safety, quality and training purposes, and give back powerful combined analytics our customers can use to improve.
My role: In collaboration with my Product Manager, I lead the research project to begin validating the value of training in SC. This work included customer interviews with both EdApp and SC customers, affinity mapping, synthesis, collaborating with data analysts, opportunity trees, and early wireframes/exploration design.

Customer interviews + affinity mapping
We interviewed customers across a range of industries both SC and Edapp serve. Speaking to customers who had been using both apps separately, and SC customers who would be interested in training. The aim was to identify opportunities for integrating training into SC and it’s products, and to understand the processes customers previously employed for organizing training in their organizations.

Themes and synthesis
Following the affinity mapping of insights from customer interviews, we synthesised these down further into the top opportunity areas for integration of EdApp and SafetyCulture. These opportunities included how we could unify platform settings and patterns between SafetyCulture and Edapp, but also included innovative ways we could integrate functionality between the two platforms. Some of the most exciting of these opportunities was in automation, machine learning and logic. For example, how poor results in an inspection or audit, could then prompt or create relevant training creation for users.

Shipped: AI training integration in Analytics
The research conducted as apart of this project contributed to our Analytics product implementing an AI course generation tool. Analytics on reoccurring flagged responses from inspection reports, could then be used as prompt to generate a custom training course.

Lo-fi exploration: A unified user profile
Another big opportunity area from the research conducted was to have a unified user profile, where all a user's training results, licences, certificates and other relevant employee information could be stored. This profile could then be used when a workplace audit, incident investigation or a problem at work occurs, and all their credentials can be located in the one place.

Hi-fi exploration: A unified user profile
Below is a hi-fi design exploration of a unified user profile, which would contain all training results, credentials and user attributes.

Impact
Following research and synthesis, we presented the themes and opportunity areas back to stakeholders and the senior leadership team. The leadership team decided training would be valuable in the SC platform. Our work then led to the creation of a new integration team, that merged training into the platform.
Opportunity areas that we presented were built and shipped by other teams. Including:
• A unified user profile with training results and credentials
• AI course creation from inspection/issue data insights
• Unified user and group management
